A range of parliamentarians visited businesses during March to find out about some the specific opportunities and challenges that currently face them. Themes of visits this month included technology, sustainability as well as sustainable technology. This month also saw one parliamentary official, Margaret McKinnon, visit the law firm Reed Smith to learn about their work they are doing to enhance socioeconomic inclusion.
Going Green with Gas
Following on from a visit to Cadent Gas in Hinkley in January, Nic Dakin MP visited Scunthorpe where Cadent produces environmentally-friendly biomethane through anaerobic digesters. As well as learning about the digesters, Nic met some of Cadent’s apprentices to hear more about their experiences on the programme.

Capitalising on technology
Rt Hon Baroness Neville-Jones is using her fellowship to expand on her knowledge in data, cyber security and innovations in AI and machine learning. On 28 March she visited Capital One in London where throughout the day she was introduced to a number of projects that Capital One are working on in the UK.
These projects include both Capital One’s Data Transformation evolution, which concerns their current and future data landscape as well as their governance, ethics and data security, and their work on machine learning and AI. Neville-Jones learned that, increasingly, machine learning and AI are being developed not only to improve customer service but also to combat fraud and other security risks.
Baroness Neville-Jones met with senior representatives including Jeremy Penzer, Chief Analytics Officer; Amy Lenander, UK CEO and Michael Halloran, External Affairs Director. They discussed how the emerging technology works and the impact that the organisation works and
The experience gained from this visit and others will help Baroness Neville-Jones build on her considerable professional knowledge of technologies being used in both data and cyber security and assist her in her parliamentary work which sees her sit on the House of Lords Select Committee for Science and Technology and the APPG for Cyber Security.
