Local, national and regional road and rail networks play a vital role in transporting people and goods to every corner of the UK. Local roads in England comprise over 97% of the total road network length, carry two-thirds of motor traffic and almost all cycle journeys. Similarly, the UK’s rail network is a vital national asset, demanding a balance between operations, maintenance and renewals, along with investments in enhancements and new projects. The Government is funding over £40bn in UK rail networks in the current period, including around £15bn for rail enhancements as part of a modernisation plan to provide faster, more frequent and reliable journeys, as well as new direct services on more comfortable trains. With the infrastructure of both road and rail vital to the UK’s connectivity, economy and user journeys, what are the short and long-term challenges that face these transport networks?

This dinner discussion will:

  • Explore the key road and rail projects the government is undertaking in partnership with industry in 2019
  • Discuss the challenges facing the UK’s transport infrastructure in both the short and long term
  • Explore the funding requirements of UK road infrastructure and whether there is a role for alternative funding models for local road maintenance and investment
  • Consider the delivery of innovation, electrification and emerging train traction technologies on the UK’s railways
  • Examine the regional distribution of funding, ensuring the UK’s regions all benefit from road and rail infrastructure improvements, and make all areas attractive for business investment.
