Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been identified as one of the four Grand Challenges in the Government’s Industrial Strategy. The World Economic Forum’s ‘The Future of Jobs 2018’ report has predicted that AI will displace 75 million jobs globally by 2022 and in the past two decades the number of industrial robots in use around the world has multiplied threefold to 2.25 million. However, it is also predicted that AI will result in the creation of 133 million new jobs. As businesses transform structures to integrate new technology and require new and yet undefined skill sets, how can government and industry help prepare for future workforce needs despite the difficulty in predicting the impact of AI? This breakfast meeting will:

  • Consider the impact of AI across the UK’s industries and consider export opportunities for new businesses
  • Examine how AI can be utilised to assist and improve people’s working lives
  • Explore how the UK workforce could be prepared for AI-led transformation of the job market and workplace, including the future role of mid-career training opportunities
