Between 2011 and 2015, more than 1,400 construction workers took their own lives in the United Kingdom. An Office of National Statistics report found that male construction workers are three times more likely to commit suicide than the average UK male. Research by Randstad showed that 25% of construction workers intended to leave the industry by the end of last year, meanwhile 73% felt their employer didn’t recognise the early signs of mental health problems. How can both the Government and industry help to reduce the stigma and improve mental health in the public, private and third sectors?

This breakfast meeting will:

  • Discuss the initiatives currently in place within the construction industry aimed at improving mental health awareness and wellbeing
  • Explore the factors that can contribute to work-related declining mental health, such as lack of stable income and job security
  • Examine the role and ability of government, employers and communities to work together to invest in the mental wellbeing of the wider UK workforce
