The Government’s Industrial Strategy Construction Sector Deal and the Clean Growth Challenge calls for a 50% reduction in emissions in the built environment. Whilst £170 million has been committed from the Industrial Challenge Fund to the ‘Transforming Construction’ programme over three years. Improving energy efficiency in new buildings is just one way to reduce emissions. Cement production is responsible for nearly half of the industry’s CO2 output and materials wastage totals nearly 120 million tonnes of waste per year, a third of the United Kingdom total. With demand for housing increasing, how can the Government and industry collaborate to tackle the challenges of decreasing carbon emissions?

This breakfast meeting will:

  • Consider the role modern methods of construction, such as off-site and modular construction, may have in reducing carbon emissions
  • Consider what the construction industry can learn from transformative technological change in other sectors
  • Explore how construction companies, particularly SMEs, can be supported in creating carbon strategies and implementation plans
