The average house costs almost eight times average earnings, an all-time record. To help address this the Government has committed to building 300,000 new houses a year by 2022 and boosted funding for Help to Buy by £10 billion. Meanwhile a 2017 Social Mobility Commission report highlighted that about a third of first-time buyers receive a gift or loan from family to help them; a 20% increase from seven years ago. With nearly two-thirds of all wealth held by those aged 55 and over, how can the Government work with mortgage lenders to unlock greater access to home ownership?

This breakfast meeting will:

  • Discuss lower cost home ownership options such as shared ownership, shared equity schemes and lifetime mortgages
  • Explore what innovative products and services could be offered to rebalance the housing market, including intergenerational mortgages and renter’s records
  • Examine how Government and industry can help to improve understanding of mortgage options and house-buying process for first-time house buyers.
