China Fellowship

20-27 May 2008

The IPT is running a China Fellowship for a group of MPs, cross party, which will culminate in a trip to Shanghai.

The impetus for this unique fellowship came from a survey of all IPT members and a selection of non-member companies from a variety of sectors which highlighted emerging economies and energy resources as key issues for MPs to be aware of. It is estimated that by 2020 three sevenths of world trade will be dictated by Asia and, by some calculations, China has now overtaken the US as the world’s top consumer of resources. It is therefore clear that it is crucial to increase the knowledge and understanding in Parliament of both the challenges and opportunities posed by China to UK plc.

Prior to visiting Shanghai, MPs have participated in four briefings on China covering the economy; global implications of the Chinese search for security; understanding how to do business in China and how politics influences Chinese business. The briefings have been delivered by renowned economist Dr Gerard Lyons, Head of Global Research at Standard Chartered Bank; Prof. Shaun Breslin, author of several books on China and Professor of Politics and International Studies at Warwick University; Andrew Leung, SBS, FRSA, a Professor and chair of the China Interest Group of the Institute of Directors’ City Branch; and Harold Chee, author of several books on China and a lecturer at Ashridge Business School.

The trip itself will involve a visit to Suzhou Industrial Park, taking in a range of high-tech, modern Chinese businesses allowing delegates to learn about the issues and development in this sector in China. As a joint venture between China and Singapore, the Industry Park will evidence the progress being made with foreign involvement and investment. The trip to Suzhou will also provide an opportunity to learn about Chinese culture with a visit to the Classical Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Shanghai the delegates will meet UK businesses operating in China to discuss the prospects for UK plc in areas including manufacturing, finance, energy and mining. Together with this they will meet senior Chinese officials, promoting links between our countries as well as being hosted by the British Consulate.

The fellowship will give the MPs strong knowledge of issues surrounding China relevant to industry in the UK together with first-hand experience of business and growth in the country. We hope that this will enhance understanding within Westminster of the challenges and opportunities China’s economic growth presents to the UK and how Parliament can promote UK plc in the future. The briefings took place in July and the visit is taking place from 20-27 May 2008.

The delegation is: Graham Allen MP, David Amess MP, Jeremy Browne MP, Ben Chapman MP, Mark Hendrick MP, Adam Holloway MP, Peter Luff MP, Bill Olner MP, Mark Prisk MP and Derek Wyatt MP. Sponsorship for the fellowship has been gratefully received from GKN, PwC, Shell and Virgin, who all have interests in China. Supporting companies include ARUP, BP plc and Marsh.
